Parks Department

The Parks Department is responsible for maintaining parks and pools within the city.  Responsibilities include mowing, trimming, keeping all areas clean and free of trash, playground maintenance, tree care, preparation of flower beds for planting in the spring, weed control, leaf removal in the fall, and sidewalk snow and ice removal in the winter.

 

Parks

Brandon Park, located on the north end of Market Street, only a few blocks from Lycoming College, has grass areas, trees, children's play equipment, a Band Shell, a baseball field and six tennis courts.

 

Memorial Park on West Fourth Street, is the Home of Bowman Field and the minor Bowman Field, oldest minor league baseball field in Pennsylvanialeague Crosscutters baseball team. 

 

Memorial Park has children’s play equipment, picnic tables and 2 basketball courts.Memorial Park picnic pavilion  Six public tennis courts and the Elm Park Softball Field are located on the south side of West Fourth Street near Memorial Park.  Elm Park is a city facility managed by the Williamsport Soft Ball Association.  The Original Little League Field is across the street from Memorial park.

 

Young Woods is located in East End.  It has a picnic pavillion, basketball court and children's playground area.

 

Newberry Park is located near Poplar Street in Williamsport’s West End. It has a perimeter walking path, playground designed for children 2 to 5 and 6 to 12 years of age, a green area, where the spring Newberry Lions Fair is held, and a Bocce Court.  Want to learn to play BOCCE?

 

Shaw Place in East End is on Sherman Street.  Shaw Place has the longest park walking path, playground equipment, a softball field, soccer field, tennis courts and a hitting wall.  East End Pool is located on the north end of Shaw Place Park.

 

Lose School Playground has a walking path, basketball court and play area.  It is located on Memorial Avenue.

 

Susquehanna State Park, a 20 acre river front recreational area in Newberry off Arch Street, is home of the Hiawatha paddle wheeler.

 

Veterans Memorial Park in the extreme West end of the City, contains memorials of past United States and world conflicts.

The Transportation Museum and Park is located adjacent to the Williamsport Historic District and the Thomas T. Taber Museum on Nichols Place.

 

Swimming Pools
The Parks Department maintains three swimming pools, two of which are Olympic size.  East End Pool is located off Sherman
Street in the Shaw Place Park, Memorial Pool is in Memorial Park, and the Shower’s Pool is located in Brandon Park.  The Shower’s Pool is for children age 10 and under and admission is free.

 

Street Trees
It is a property owner’s responsibility to maintain trees the on city right-of-way adjacent to their property.  (City Ordinance Article #915)  Street tree permits are available in the Codes Department at no charge.  Why is it important to maintain and replace street trees?  Follow this link to Tree City USA

 

Building Maintenance Department
This department maintains public buildings throughout the city.  This includes City Hall, fire stations, the Public Services Building, park sheds, Historic Bowman Field, and the Hiawatha buildings at Susquehanna State Park. 
Special Events
All departments assist in preparing for special city events throughout the year including: 
The Grand Slam Little League Parade in August.  Join thousands of spectators lining the streets to welcome the 16 teams of the annual Little League World Series. All 16 Little League teams ride on floats, accompanied by their coaches and local volunteer "uncles"
 
The annual Williamsport Mardi Gras Celebration! In January of each year, and the Set the Night to Music, July the 4th Fireworks in downtown Williamsport.
 
The Streets and Parks Department helps welcome the winter holiday season by installing decorations and lights throughout the City, South Williamsport, and Duboistown, and also for the Festival of Lights in Brandon Park.

The department works closely with the YMCA Recreation Commission, assisting in many recreation functions throughout the year.
